The history of beer has long since been overwritten to exclude the important role that women have played in brewing, instead choosing to exploit and neglect women as an audience.  You wouldn’t know it from today’s beer culture, but women were the very first brewmasters or brewsters.  The HERstory of beer dates back 5,000 years or more when women first discovered that what we use to make bread can also be transformed into sweet, delicious alcohol.  As kitchen work, brewing was considered a “woman’s job”, but these historic females were creating the process for the superlative tasting beer we drink today.

 In honour of International Women’s Day we have created our first annual scholarship to help aid Women in the brewing industry.  There continues to be harassment and discrimination littered throughout the industry, particularly of women/marginalized individuals.  Henderson built itself as an inclusive space from day one and we continue to live by that principle.  This is why we have created the “HERStory” Scholarship so that we can help empower Women to get involved in what should be a very fun, exciting industry.  Taking back the male dominated history of brewing and making HERstory.  We want to hear your HERstory!

Henderson is the neighbourhood brewery, we strive to create balanced and thoughtful beers that honour traditional ways, but are not restricted to them.  We want our beers to spark ideas, tell stories and most of all, be refreshing and enjoyable.  We are proud of our beer and the hard work that goes into it, but we also recognize that there are a lot of other great beers out there.  For these reasons we say “The Best beer is the beer you love”.
